Every year Shelter Island hosts a 10k race; this year it's Saturday, June 18th, at 5:30 pm. (Shelter Island, while not, strictly speaking, part of the North Fork, shares much in common with it and is a short, beautiful ferry ride from Greenport.) People run for many reasons, but this year, a new team has joined the crowd, one raising funds to send kids with cancer to a weeklong "Camp Adventure" at Shelter Island's Camp Quinipet: Kids Need MoRE.
(Kids Need MoRE is a 501c(3), volunteer-only organization, working to enhance the lives of kids and young people with cancer and their families. For background, check out this video and the group's website.)
Fundraising chair Jackie Lorenz explained "Camp Adventure will be celebrating it's 17th season on Shelter Island this year. We anticipate 170 kids. We love our relationship with the Island. They are wonderful people, always looking to help us."
Lorenz didn't mean "help" in an abstract sense: the Shelter Island community really pitches in for the cause. Lorenz said "The fire department and police department do a cook-out for us every year. Quinipet Retreat Center - our relationship and partnership has been invaluable. They are a friend to us and let us call Shelter Island home every summer."
Each year Camp Adventure has a theme with over-the-top events, like personal fireworks shows, concerts and carnivals. It is completely run by volunteers, including the medical team. Our dedicated team of healthcare professionals have allowed even children who are critically ill to experience camp. Camp Adventure is for children ages 6 – 18. Young people 17 – 18 can take part in the year round Leadership in Training and Counselor in Training programs.
Lorenz ran the 10k last year--its a favorite race of hers--and recognized that the community spirit and the charity's deep connection to the island made the 10k a good fundraising opportunity. So she decided to field a team for the camp this year. (Because Camp Adventure costs $2,500/child for the 1 week overnight camp fundraising is imperative; because it's all volunteer, your money only goes to help the kids.)
Runners can sign up in person on race day until 4pm. Lorenz will have a table on the finish field so please come and walk with us or meet us in person.
